How to start a career in Cyber Security?

Cyber security is a booming industry. Organizations are increasingly relying on technical solutions to carry out core operations, and they need a way to ensure that these systems are not vulnerable to cybercriminals.

Since the number of potential workers is outnumbering the number of openings, now is a great time to join an industry that pays well and offers plenty of opportunities for advancement.

Let's look at four different ways you can get started in the cyber security sector.

1) Identify your transferable skills

Unlike many other professions, cyber security does not require prior experience, though many people who enter the field do so from jobs that require similar skills, such as systems administration or data analysis.

There's no reason why you can't get a foothold on the cyber security career ladder if you can demonstrate the value of your previous experience – what recruiters refer to as "transferable skills."

There are many entry-level positions available as well. Account executives and junior penetration testers, for example, are likely to be new to the job and can learn on the job.

Of course, any prior experience is a huge plus, so if you can, consider doing an internship. You could also volunteer to assist your employer's or academic institution's IT department in your spare time.

2) You can learn a lot about the industry for free

It's always a good idea to read as much as possible about a subject to get a better understanding of what you're getting yourself into. There are numerous blogs dedicated to the practical aspects of cyber security.

There's also our own blog(s), which keeps you informed about the latest cyber security news and insights. You may also follow industry professionals on Twitter, as many of them provide useful advice, participate in debates, and answer questions.

3) Get industry connections

Making new friends and making connections is a great way to get your foot in the door. Although networking websites like LinkedIn can be beneficial, you should take advantage of any opportunity to meet with people in person.

Conferences are a great place to start. Each year, there are a slew of events around the world where you can hear keynote speakers, participate in roundtables and workshops, and network.

You should also familiarise yourself with your company's cyber security experts. We're not suggesting you approach them during their lunch break, but a few well-timed questions could lead to valuable information.

More importantly, simply getting to know them on a professional level may give you an advantage when a position in the department becomes available.

4) Gain a qualification

Qualification is the most effective way to gain an edge over other potential cyber security professionals.

Your educational requirements will be determined by your chosen career path. If you don't have this figured out yet, or if you just want a better understanding of how to deal with security risks in general, look into a course like our Cyber Security Internship programme.

This internship will teach you the fundamentals of cyber security and how to protect your company from a variety of threats. You'll gain a true understanding of the skills needed to deal with cyber threats through group discussions and practical exercises led by real-world industry experts.
